A blog's purpose

We can all do little things to improve our corner of the world. The problem is that the precise nature of those little things isn't always obvious. If I want to lose weight, should I swig apple cider vinegar or only drink juice or give up meat or eat a lot of meat? Original scientific studies are often hidden behind a paywall, or so thick with specialist language that wading through one can send you to sleep. Such studies are often interpreted by popular writers, but without a background in scientific research many writers struggle to stay faithful to the take-home messages of the original study.

The Internet provides us with a rich soup of facts and opinions, but fishing out the bacon chunk of truth from the murky broth of pseudoscience can be an exhausting task. Luckily, finding such nuggets of wisdom is my favourite game. I enjoy watching new trends, beliefs, and fad systems emerge, and then applying critical thinking to check the reasoning behind them. I also enjoy exploring new topics and research, particularly in the fields of zoology, ecology, sustainability and mental health.

I hope that, by keeping this blog, I can expose more people to evidence and truth. I will reveal facts and dispel pseudoscience, but most importantly of all my writing will be based entirely on the original relevant scientific articles. I aim to translate science directly, not simply put a spin on it or bend the truth to make a good story.

I hope you enjoy my blog.
